The best things to do in Llanes
If you are staying in Llanes for a few days, we recommend that you start with a stroll through the beautiful old town, declared a Historic-Artistic Site and one of the best preserved in Asturias.
In the narrow streets of the old town of Llanes, there is vibrant commercial activity, giving rise to a whimsical circuit full of motifs and cobblestones set within medieval and renaissance architecture. Sablón Beach can be found right in the centre of the town, a beautiful, clean and protected cove, with a long promenade that runs along the cliff above. The unforgettable San Pedro Promenade is almost one kilometre long.
Its modern port is protected by an iron breakwater with the bold colours of the Memory Cubes, used by the Basque painter Ibarrola to rescue the breakwater from its grey existence and turn it into a canvas.
It is also worth exploring the beaches in the area; there are more than 30 spread over 35 kilometres of coastline. Their length varies from 20 metres, that of Villanueva, to 1,200 metres, that of San Antolin. Most of them are coves, although there are also larger ones, such as Vidiago, which is 200 metres long, Toró Beach, which is 220 metres long, and Torimbia (an extraordinarily beautiful nudist beach), which is 500 metres long.
What to see in Asturias
From Llanes you can visit some of the tourist spots of Asturias, such as the Covadonga mountain, just 30 minutes away by car, and the magnificent cave of La Santina carved into the rock, a pilgrimage point on the Way of Saint James.
Bordering the coast of Llanes on the rocky cliffs and cattle meadows is the San Pedro Promenade. While in past centuries it was a strategic point for whale watching or a defensive watchtower against enemies, today it is one of the most important tourist attractions of the Asturian town and an essential route for hiking lovers.
If you are looking for outdoor activities, there is also the Cares Route, which crosses the central and eastern massifs of the Picos de Europa mountain range along the course of the Cares River. With canals plunging vertiginously from the heights into the cold waters of the river, this path runs for 12 kilometres, linking Asturias with León along the edge of an impressive gorge. Selva Asturiana, an active tourism complex where you can enjoy various activities surrounded by nature, is located just 2 km from Llanes.
