Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of the island of Gran Canaria, the province of Las Palmas and the Canary Islands Autonomous Community.
The city contains infrastructures dating from various historical periods, such as the Canarias cathedral in the Vegueta district (the oldest in the city).
Capital of leisure
The city has a very active economy and there are pedestrianised streets with numerous shops, restaurants and leisure facilities. It also offers an extensive, varied range of cultural activities: theatre, cinema, opera, concerts, visual arts and dance are regular features of the city’s life. Highlights include the Canaries Music Festival, the Theatre and Dance Festival and the International Film Festival.
Superb beaches
The city has five beaches, the most important being Las Canteras. Located in the north of the city, this beach with its golden sands is notable for its bar, a limestone reef over 100,000 years old. It is the most important urban beach in the Canaries and one of the finest in Europe.
Las Alcaravaneras beach, which attracts crowds throughout the year, is the second most popular beach among the city’s residents. It lies just in front of the Silken Saaj Las Palmas, and the sea front promenade runs alongside it, leading from Las Alcaravaneras to Playa de San Cristóbal and finishing at Playa de la Laja. The promenade is an attractive recreational area, popular with those who enjoy walking, running, cycling and other sports. It is the fourth largest beach in the municipality and faces east, in the Las Isletas bay, in Puerto de la Luz.
